PDC World Championships: International Qualifiers Completed
THE international qualifiers for the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship have now been completed, with the final players winning through tournaments held around the world last weekend.
The Preliminary Round of the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship features 14 international champions as well as the runner-up from the PDPA Qualifier and Paul Barham, who finished second behind Michael van Gerwen on the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour Order of Merit.
Austria’s Dietmar Burger defeated Slovakia’s Peter Martin 6-3 in the final of the East European Qualifier.
Burger also defeated Pero Ljubic, Roxy James Rodriguez and Wilhelm Schwingenschlogel in the latter stages of the event, which featured players from Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Kevin Munch (pictured) won the German qualifier, defeating Bernd Roith 10-8 in the final, with Andree Welge and Karsten Koch losing in the semi-finals.
Jose Augusto Oliveira de Sousa will become the first Portuguese player to compete at Alexandra Palace after winning through the 110-player field in the West European Qualifier which featured competitors from Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra.
De Sousa took a 6-3 victory over Eduardo Sales Lopes in the final, and also defeated Julio Barbero in the semis and Carlos Rodriguez – the Spaniard who has previously graced the Alexandra Palace stage – in the last eight.
Per Laursen, who defeated John Part in last year’s World Championship before losing to Phil Taylor in round two, has won the Danish Qualifying Series, which featured play in 16 events during 2011.
Laursen topped the rankings ahead of Vladimir Andersen to qualify for a sixth successive World Championship.
Petri Korte, a 44-year-old from Lahti, has won the Finland Qualifier, taking victory with a 3-0 sets victory over Sami Sanssi in the final.
Korte came from 2-1 down to defeat Marko Kantele 3-2 in the semi-finals, while last year’s qualifier Veijo Viinikka also lost out in the last four.
Dennis Nilsson, a former competitor in ‘strongest man’ competitions, has won the Swedish Qualifier, and Malaysia’s Lee Choon Peng won the South Asia Qualifier.
The final Players Championship events for PDC professionals will be held this coming weekend in Wigan, with the top 32 from the PDC Order of Merit joined by 16 Players Championship Order of Merit qualifiers.
The last two places will then be fought for in the PDPA Qualifier on Monday November 28.
The draw will be made on Tuesday November 29, live on Sky Sports News at around 11.30am.
